I had to do a repair on Windows XP today, and now it takes forever on the
blue start up screen. Once it gets to the log in page, it's fine. Does
anyone know what could be causing this?

thanks!

Have checked to see what programs are being launched at the start. You
should also check for spyware as these load at login.

thanks... In Programs, Startup - it shows empty. But when I go to RUN,
MSCONFIG, it shows several things in startup - but I don't know what I can
disable because I don't want to mess anything up. What shows is:
Windows\System32\igfxtray.exe
Windows\System32\hkcmd.exe
Windows\System32\dla\tfswctrl.exe
Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe/r
Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\PCMService.exe
Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe –atboottime
Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe –osboot
Windows\system32\rqvplsay.exe
Windows\satmat.exe
Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mmtask.exe
Program Files\REGSHAVE\REGSHAVE.EXE/AUTORUN
PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcmnhdlr.exe/checktask
PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcagent.exe
PROGRA~1\Mcafee.com\Agent\McUpdate.exe
PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsshld.exe
WINDOWS\wupdt.exe
Program Files\Mcafee\McAfee QuickClean\Plguni.exe/START

I have it cleaned up, so I don't think it's spyware ....

For starters, you've got one trojan (wupdt.exe) and one spyware
entry (satmat.exe). Also, I have no idea what rqvplsay.exe is.

Try going here and run the free scans:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

Have you run AdAware and Spybot S&D on this machine? They're
available here.

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/spybot.html

Download, update and run both programs, preferrably in Safe Mode.

You should leave all the McAfee items running. To see what the
other items are, go here:

http://www.processlibrary.com/

Just enter the "Program Name".exe info (e.g. igfxtray.exe,
sgtray.exe, etc.) in the search box. You should get some advice
on whether it's worth keeping. That's a decision you're going to
have to make. From my experience, it's better to open programs
like Quick Time and MusicMatch Jukebox and look for an Options or
Preferences page and disable their startup settings there. Quite
often, the next time you use the program, there back in your
Msconfig startup list.

Glad to hear your PC's running better.
To prevent this from happening in the future you might want to do
the following:
Keep McAfee VirusScan up to date and schedule it to run a scan at
least once a week.
Do the same for AdAware and Spybot. Update and scan once a week.
Check Msconfig and look for any new entries.
Add the TrendMicro and PandaSoftware sites to your favorites. You
never know when they may come in handy. It wouldn't hurt to stop
by once a month and run their free scans.
