I've been having an issue with powering on my PC lately and can't figure out what the source of the issue is. I built the PC a little under a year ago with some fairly high-end hardware and its been running absolutely fine for ages. Lately however I can't always get it to start up and I don't know if this is a hardware issue or down to faulty mains electrics.

I can't find any loose connections inside and everything plugged into my PC is receiving power as normal ((Lights on my headset and audio controllers are on) but it simply doesn't boot when I press the power button. The only way I've been able to get around it is by turning the extension I use off at the wall for 10 - 30 seconds then trying again to find the computer boots up without a problem.

I'd appreciate any help or advice as I'm all out of ideas at the moment.

That is typically what happens when a power supply protection circuit has tripped. It takes a complete power down of the power supply to clear that circuit. It is designed that way to get your attention. Those circuits only trip when there is a serious problem, like a short circuit, too much power being drawn, etc...

Without knowing what hardware you have, I cannot go into more detail. But I would suspect your power supply based on what you have said is happening.

1. Does this happen when the PC is shut down, or goes to sleep?
2. Next time it happens, unplug the power bar, press the power button, plug the bar back in, power up again.

Might be a faulty PSU but it could also be a problem waking from sleep. The steps above wipe out sleep mode.

This is unfortunately still an issue.

It comes in waves, it will have a couple of weeks where is has problems starting up then it will be fine for a month or so.

The only way I can get it to start when this happens is to switch off at the socket, press the power button repeatedly for a few seconds then switch back on at the wall.
