Start up problems

Hello,
When i start my laptop i get a repeating beeping sound which if left for about 45 secs displays the boot menu. However if i press any key the beeping stops and the laptop starts normally. But when i try to connect to the internet i have no joy. Right clicking my ISP icon shows that the options are scrolling up and down by themselves Pressing any key stops this and i can continue with no problems. I have tried compressed air on the keyboard and fiddled with the actual keys but no joy. Any advice please?

Do the beeps start as soon as you turn on the laptop? The number of beeps each represent a specific problem when doing the 'POST'. If you know how many beeps there are it will give a better indication of what the problem is.

Thanks for your reply. The beeps are continuous and last about 30 secs maybe more during which the boot menu loads. If i then start windows normally everything seems fine. I'm just concerned there might be a serious problem which could eventually knacker the laptop completely It's a Compaq CQ60 by the way and roughly a year old. Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Tried counting the number of beeps. Impossible! They were too fast and went on too long. But if i press the up arrow (below the caps lock key ) either before the beeps start or even after, then everything seems to run fine. Thanks again for trying to help me.

That does sound plausable. I'll check each key individually. Cheers.
