Started lagging in almost every game

Would this be a CPU issue? This all started about six months ago. Every game auto-detects the settings to the lowest. I've use ccleaner and the usual spyware/malware cleaners. Also while alt-tabbed from a game, firefox and video player was also extremely laggy. My pc was built in 2012 so I know the parts are outdated but I don't have the budget to do a complete rebuild if I can just replace the CPU.

I searched other threads and none matched my issue exactly so sorry if this has been answered.

It would really be helpful if you said what your build consists of.

Generally speaking though. Getting a better gpu would help any gaming situation if you are only playing at 1080p. That is unless you have a cpu that would severely bottleneck it. Really hard to say though since you gave no information to work with.

That cpu while old is still pretty good. Apparently you can go as high as an i7 4930k or x on that motherboard. They are both quite expensive new. I don't think I would trust to buy one of those two cpus old.

I think a better idea would be to get a new video card. Your card is so old. You could get a 1050ti for around 150 dollars. You could also get a gtx 1080 for around 550 dollars. An example. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137084

Another thought would be to get a new Ryzen setup and the card for less then the cost of a new i7 4930k. It would surely be much faster. Though not faster then getting the gtx 1080 alone, if it is just for gaming.
