I'm so.. So nervous about this, I know I'm competent with most basic issues. I'm currently getting my HND in Networking, and have my IT essentials Qualification and my HNC computing certificate.

Has anyone got any tips for troubleshooting computers that don't start up? Either due to a corrupted Operating system or a faulty hard drive, how would I identify these two issues?

Has anyone here worked in a place of education before, what are some of the most common issues you came up against?

Professors, if you are at a University, know everything - well not all come off that way. Some are very people friendly while others think they deserve respect. After you are there for a while, you will know how to treat each individual. Don't just call people by their first name until you become more familiar or they tell you to use their name.
Are you the only person in this department? Hopefully not. If not, listen and learn. When I started my job ... a long time ago, there were people around that knew way more than I did. Use them - in a good way. Knowledge with experience can't be replaced. There is no shame in asking for help/advice. Troubleshooting computers, like any electronic device starts out with the basics. Is it plugged in/connected correctly. After that you have to look for clues to point you in the right direction.
