startup freezes with nvidia drivers later than 296

When I install Nvidia drivers later than 296 on reboot system freezes on start screen I assume at the point of trying to load driver

Have you uninstalled previous drivers before loading the newer ones

even did clean install win7 to new drive same result

Have the latest BIOS? What mobo, CPU combo?

Gigabyte EP45-UD3L,intel Core 2 Duo E8400, 4gig ram, Nvidia GT640
nothing I have tried seems to solve this problem, have last bios for this MB
