Startup problem - monitor refresh rate, resolution?

Calling all Sims2 gurus,

*How can I tell Sims 2 to use a lower refresh rate?*

On starting the game the monitor goes all bLuRy-LiNeD
Old Belinia 15" CRT monitor.
It obviously can't handle the refresh rate for the default resolution 🙁
Even tried running at 640x480; shortcut 'compatibility' option.

My Wife's PC stats: (she's sims1 fan, ecstatic to get sims2)
Duron 700MHz
384MB SD-RAM
GeForce 440MX 64MB
WinXP Pro
Old Belinia 15" CRT monitor

Longtime sims fan, regular on sims1 forum (ages ago).
Please excuse if this problem is well-known,
I have googled, and skimmed the 300+ messages here,
didn't find anything technical enough to answer my question.

Hello i am not a specialist
i think the game will run under the refresh rate of your video driver
so if you go by youre desktop and rightmouse click to properties advanced
you can enter your videocard refresh mode
there you can put it for instance to 70 or 72 rate i wouldnt go lower as
then it goes blinking to much
and in resolutions you can go to 800x600
this can be done also in the sims 2 itself in options monitor

Part of the problem could be that you are trying to load the game on a
processor that is less than the recommended speed. The minimum recommended
speed processor is an 800 Mhz. Even an AMD duron runs slightly slower than a
regular Athlon chipset. So I would say that almost being A+ hardware
certified, that you should consider your processor a potential problem.

Hey Pend,
Yup, I do beleive you get the prise.
Got the monitor problem sorted out, but the BSOD bit me.
Just a few hundred odd MHz away from Sims2. oh well,
looks like time for an upgrade.
