Wondering if anyone else has run across this...

I'm running Clay's SW/ESB kit and the games play ok, but I noticed I'm
missing specific graphics entirely...

I found an atari service bulletin that stated exactly what I'm running
into...
---------------------
MISSING STARS
Problem: During the attract mode or game play, the screen may not show stars
or only one star. In addition, lights may not exist on the surface of the
Death Star so that the towers look like they're floating in space. The
problem usually occurs when the game is first powered up.

Short Term Solution:
Turn the power switch off and on until stars reappear, or short out the rest
test points on the Main PCB

Long Term Solution:
Change the EPROM on the Main PCB at location 1F from a part number
136021-114 to a 136021-214. All games built after the following serial
numbers have incorporated the above EPROM change: (UR9275 and SD1388)
---------------------

I can't do the on/off trick to bring the stars back, but do get only one
star at the beginning of the attract screen that flys away and then nothing
again... I also get the issue where the towers look like they're floating.
Problem is, the kit replaces the 1F rom... so I can't exactly swap that
out.. :)

I'm going to recheck the install one more time, but thought I'd throw this
out there to see if anyone's been down this road before..

FWIW, I've never had this symptom turn out being the 1F EPROM-- it was
always the mathbox (usually just one of the four Mathbox PROMs). If the
other '3D' objects in the game (TIE fighters in particular) look OK though
maybe it *is* something else... Does self-test say anything is not working
correctly?

Everything checks out ok during the self test.. but I tracked it down to
chip 7L. Replacing it with an original chip fixed the stars, but then
caused all kinds of strange effects in ESB, even though it played...star
wars looked ok, though...

Is 7L a mathbox PROM? The Mathbox PROMs for Star Wars and ESB are
different. The ones used in the multigame are the same as the ones used in
ESB.

If it turns out to be a mathbox PROM, it is going to be a bit on the pricey
side.

Yep, that's a Mathbox PROM (82S137 or similar). The ESB PROMs are a
superset of the SW code though, so you can run SW still with three of the
SW/ESB PROMs and one SW PROM like Pete did. (ESB will probably go bonkers
though. ;-)
