I just bought a dell laptop and I was wondering if I had to worry with static electricity like sliding it across my pants legs... or in the carrying bag I got at Circuit City that says it is meant for a laptop... But its similar to the material that 'blue jeans' are made out of.

you needn't worry. If the notebook gets a static shock that could potentially short out an IC, it will shut down part of the PCB (i.e. sound card) until you power off, and then on again.
