Now if Apple had Valve under its belt none of this PROGRESS would happen. They'd box it up and keep it under their watchful eye monitoring every move. But with a free thinking and fun company like Valve they expand with PC gamers in their best interest.

If more games start getting ported over, Linux will definably become a more viable platform. Games still keeps me tied to Windows.

Does this mean that any game on steam can be played on Lunix or just the ones with the source engine? This is awesome ether way. I knew it wouldn't be much of a step to get it on linux after they put it on MAC but i didn't think they would accually do it yay.

too bad 95% of the crapple computers won't be able to play any of the games due to their their vastly overpriced and outdated hardware.

I have just made the recent switch to dual boot systems running first Karmic Koala ubuntu and now Lucid Lynx and I LOVE LINUX now, the only thing from keeping me on a dual boot system is the occasional game I like to play which is becoming less frequent.

Now if this really happens than I will switch over completely, I have played around with the virtual machines line Wine and the one by Oracle but its still not the same.

This is friggen sweet.

Ok, this is awesome. When I first read that article on steam expanding to another platform I was disapointed that it wasn't linux. I guess I just needed to give them a little more time.

+1 steam

Honestly.... if they get my steam games ported over to linux the only thing windows will have left for me is just drivers for my pen tablet and Adobe Studio.

Holy Crap!! I really want to make the full jump to Linux but gaming has been holding me back. This might be the game changer!

I'm looking forward to comparing performance of source games running under Linux natively vs Windows. You'd think there would be a noticeable fps gain^^.

Anyone got the official link to Valves announcement?

Oh and is someone going to photo shop Gordon a Tuxedo? Give the man a Tuxedo bois!

If the game has been ported to Linux you can play it. It's not limited to Source games, but it is limited to games with OpenGL counterparts to their DirectX implementations.

Source games can play on just about anything. The only thing a modern Mac may not play well (and well doesn't mean 80+ FPS to most people) is Left 4 Dead (2). Expect to see CSS n00bs who thought that Steve Jobs promised them a win every time with their Magic mouse though :)

More like a noticeable loss. NVIDIA binary drivers are ok at best, and ATI drivers are definitely sub-par. Hopefully this will give the two companies incentive to boost their funding for the Linux dev team a bit.

I personally don't mind using Windows, but I do mind the amount of resources it uses up sometimes. I have an old gaming laptop (T8300, 8600M GT, 6 GB) so I need all the extra resources I can get when playing games.

This makes me very happy. I literally just reinstalled windows again for the first time in 4 months today for tf2. Having this native on Linux would be absolutely wonderful.

Which for the most part means valve only games. It's been awhile since a AAA game has been released without directx

Limit your expectations about a Linux client until it is released (or officially announced). It may end up being just for Linux game servers, not game clients.

Meh, I got OSX and Windows 7 on my PC.

I think OSX is as good as Windows 7 for usability, now with steam I can see myself using OSX as my main OS. The only difference is that I have a PC :)

That's ok because most AAA games are garbage anyway.

Please don't crush my hopes and dreams.
