STEAM opponents and proponents either love or hate it with a passion.

STEAM has some deep-rooted social-economic psyche.

Proponents of STEAM (Valve's Fanbois) are mostly from middle or higher
social-economic stratas of the society, mostly children of rich parents,
they can afford a high-speed broadband internet and sophisticated
computers. They also benefit from highly more advanced technical
education from priveleged colleges and schools. Therefore they won't get
into much serious problems as with their parents money, they can change
their hadware components on the fly until all works fine (lucky
configuration, sooner or later they will change some hardware
combination that works).

STEAM bandwith won't be a problem for them as with their superior
broadband they don't feel the pain and frustration that other users feel
when having to redownload or update a corrupted installation on a 56k
connection.

Valve's fanbois usually are on high horse behavior ("because I can
afford " behavior). As being born rich, They have little or no
compassion nor empathy for people with limited economical ressources
and technical knowlege who encounter the numerous problems with STEAM
and treat these poor fellows with contempt. They ridicule any user with
problem by branding him "whinger" or "get a faster computer, get a
broadband" (only if he could) or downright impolite insulting remarks to
cut him off. This merciless pack attack pattern and bullying tactics are
very typical of Valve's fanbois.

They defending Valve as if their parents have a %50 share in the company
stocks and refute to see even slightest fault with STEAM and Source
games, everything STEAMY is perfect (The Emperor's New Clothes
syndrome, a common delusion and hallucination about the coolness of
belongging to STEAM bandwagon). They refuse to see the imperfection of
STEAM just to look trendy, cool and technically sophisticated, just to
feel superior than people who can't (vanity syndrome).

STEAM games are designed with the high class, rich broadband Alienware
owner in mind, it's the games for the people who are born with a silver
spoon in their mouth.

STEAM actually is just another facet of our society where higher
socio-economic class bullys the under-dogs and always wins...because
they can.

You forgot to mention that Valve are discriminating against people who
can't afford computers. They should distribute it with a free high-end
PC, so everyone can play it.

No-one is saying Steam is perfect. But for most people it seems to work
OK. There are a few who are having problems because of technical
issues, and yes, over a dial-up connection it's slow. (But so is
downloading films, software, music and large pictures. Some internet
sites are slow over a dial-up. Downloading patches, demos and free
content is slower over a dial-up.)

Valve has estimated that they can sell enough copies of HL2 to make a
profit on the development costs. Therefore they reckon there is a
sufficiently large market. It's not in their interest to unnecessarily
restrict that market.

But to claim that Steam is some kind of socio-economic weapon is just
ludicrous. Steam is a means for delivering gaming software to a
computer. It is intended to reduce piracy and make patching easier.

The newest games usually push the hardware further each time, and every
few years you reach a point where your PC can't play the new games any
more. What do you do? Either upgrade, or (like I did) play the cheap
old games until I could afford to upgrade.

It's no different to cars - my car is old and rattly, so I either
replace it, or fix it and pray it'll last a bit longer. Or clothes -
I'd love a new leather jacket, but I can't afford it, so I'll make this
denim one last a bit longer.

And calling yourself df is fooling no-one, although I'm pleased to see
your use of the English language has improved and become more rational.
Hopefully, you'll get polite, rational responses too.

One of these days, someone will prove me right, that Usenet is a forum
for informed discussion.

But until then...

For the better part, I've found that the majority of on-line players
are rude, ill-tempered, obnoxious little snot-nosed kids, which is why
I don't play on-line.

OR did you mean a load of pants.

If so, why is it, take a look around, take a close look at the people who
love Steam. I think this guy hit the nail on the head.

Lol. It is already such a forum but there will always be (probably very
young) folk popping up and displaying symptoms of a tourettes syndrome
sufferer.

Your argument BTW was valid and fits with my own experiences but I
really do not think that df/difool or whoever is posting because they
want an informed discussion or debate do you?

Exactly.

You can get a PC capable of running HL2 for less than £400, probably
far less if you build it yourself, likewise (in the UK at least)
broadband Internet is so cheap that if you use the Internet at all
there really is no excuse for not getting it at all, £19.99 for a 512
line (a massive 66p a day) or £14.99 for unlimited dial up - difficult
choice! (you can even get 2 gig limited for £15.99 a month)

The UK is to have 99% coverage within a couple of years so Broadband
is hardly difficult to get hold of.

BTW I'm a fairly low paid worker with a family and bills to pay.

Absolutely, look around. You can see the rich/poor divide - jumps out
at you straight away. Saitek for example is obviously grammar school
educated or he wouldn't be so offended by your misspelling nor have the
gaul to correct you.

....shouldn't that be social, economic or socio-economic rather than
social-economic BTW?

There are still rural areas that will most likely never get broadband
though. And there are many people who for one reason or another can't work.

Satellite based broadband.

They can hardly afford to waste money on something so trivial as a
computer game or the required level of hardware to play the game in
the first place.

Well, I can't speak for anyone else, but I bought the PC while I was working
but later had to give up the job because of ill health.
