How do you know it was 'fine'?
Did you check Device Manager for conflicts or disabled/unused/redundant
devices before you installed Steam? Some modem drivers (connexant) can be a
real pain to get working properly if they've become corrupted in any way. I
speak from personal experience on that one.
In my experience almost every Windows computer I've been on has benefited
from some behind the scenes poking about. Especially if its been used a lot
by different people who never bother with device/driver config checks etc or
its never been serviced properly by techno savvy operators.
You'd be surprised how messed up some ppls systems are even though they
'appear' 'fine'. I suppose thats some credit to Windows.
