You can put the Steam client on a Linux distro or you can do a clean install of Steam OS. Which ever you like. Steam OS is really nothing but their own flavor of Debian with the Steam client installed into it. It boots to the console like Steam client by default but has a regular desktop to back out to for regular desktop use. Or you may default it to go to desktop when it boots either is your choice. Many Linux users might simply consider the latter of having which ever Linux distro they like with the Steam client on it which would ultimately act the same. The main advantage to the actual Steam OS is support further down the road. Steam OS will be a little bit more mainstream for the average user with updates regularly sent from Steam for Steam OS otherwise if you're happy with your distro and what it provides then I guess it's safe to stick with it. If you want a bit more support along the lines of updates specifically catered to such a dedicated gaming Linux distro then Steam OS is a logical option.
