I have a G3258 on an Asrock Z97 Pro3 with 16gb DDR3
My friend gave me his old XFX R9 280, which works good for the older titles I play. I wanna play some new ones though, so I’m stuck.
Should I spend the money to buy a new MoBo, ram, CPU (Ryzen 3 probably) plus the GPU, or spend a lot less for a used 4th gen I7 and just get a 1060 6Gb.
Thanks

Solution
definitely go for the k. as for 4690k v 4790 v 4790k it will depend on the game you play. those which are more core heavy will suffer on the 4690k than the 4790, but those which like higher clocks the 4690k will go better. the trend however is for more core useage in newer titles. go all in for the 4790k - best of both worlds and you are future proofing yourself a little bit on the purchase and as you say you already have the mobo.
i upgraded from a 4690k to a 4790k as i found the 4690k was bottle-necking my 1080 sli performance in some games (not all).

Just to add, as far as I can tell it’s gonna be like $500 for a Ryzen set up, but maybe $1-250 cheaper for a used intel plus the 1060? I think anyway. Either way I’m gonna go 1060 6GB. Thanks for any help.

I’m compiling a pcpartpicker list with that combo right now to see a price estimate, I was planning on doing like a R2200 though or whichever is the $99 one. It probably would be better to spend the extra $80 I guess though.
But yeah I probably could do the R2600 and a 1060, I just don’t know if I WANT to spend that much in the next few weeks lol.

PCPartPicker part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/f7wsfH
Price breakdown by merchant: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/f7wsfH/by_merchant/

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor ($184.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: MSI - A320M BAZOOKA Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard ($69.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: Patriot - Viper 4 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: EVGA - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6 GB GAMING Video Card ($209.99 @ B&H)
Total: $524.96

Something like this? Not sure about the MoBo, found the cheapest one that had 4 slots for memory.
Though I should mention I’ve found 1060 6gb used on eBay from reputable vendors for like $160

144hz (even in 1080p) are a game changer and worth getting - particularly if you play any fps games.

you could get gsync or set a lower hz in nvidia control panel (if your fps are a lot lower). i have a 1080p 144hz (no gsync) and when its getting frames around 100 it doesn't bother me.

a gtx 1060 will be fine for your existing monitor (with an i7).

That sounds good to me, I may just get the i7 for now and rock the r9 280 until I can buy like a 1070 or 1080 or something.

For the i7 though, is it worth it to get a k CPU? I’ve never really overclocked much, but it seems like a waste to not get one since I have a Z97 board. Cause the used ones are a lot of higher than just a 4790. Or, would it make a big difference to go for a i5 4690k vs a 4790 or 4790k?
Thanks

I would say always get a gpu before anything else see if mabye you could get the 1060 used and the ryzen used because it would be cheaper but I would say get a nice gpu and save up for ryzen
