Stick with GTX 770 or Wait for GTX 8XX

Hi guys,

I bought the ASUS GTX 770 a week back and I still have the ability to return it if I desire. The reason I'm here is because I heard the GTX 8XX series is being released around October and there should be performance for price increase if I get a GTX 8xx at that time.

I game at 1080p but there are games like Watch Dogs and Crysis 3 that the 770 can't max out on unless I lower the AA to get 60 FPS. Before, I was considering to exchange it for the 780 but spending $500-$600 for it seems overpriced in my opinion.

The additional VRAM could secure me for the future as games are requiring more for higher settings these days (Watch Dogs - Ultra Textures).

Should I stick with my GTX 770 or return it and wait for the GTX 8XX to come out?

If you can wait, you might as well.

If you need to upgrade the 770 will be good for years to come. There is no point in waiting for hardware that may have a horrible launch, and not offer much more performance. (20nm lithography pushed back to 2015 for example). If you wait for something better, you will always be waiting.

I would say if you arent satisfied with your current card get the 770.

Well if you have the patience til octomber return it but still 800 series may have drops in wd even titan kneel before this unoptimizated giant turd.

If you know you wont need a GPU until the next ones are released, then you might as well return it. I am kind of in your predicament, but i have no GPU and waiting for the new ones.

Got to say, Im tempted to buy a gpu everyday just so i can do some gaming on my PC, as movies and TV gets boring after a while. still I dont want to buy one until the next ones are released, which, could even mean, id be waiting till next year and miss the big games at christmas.

If i had a GPU already, then I would wait, then when the next ones are released, i wont have to buy straight away and get the next ones when they start to get discounted at the end of next year.

I have an HD 6870 that I was using up until last week. And if you wait until the end of next year, your going to want to wait for the GTX 9XX to come out and then its going to be the same thing all over again. That's the reason I hate buying hardware months before the next generation is going to be released. You end up wishing you waiting. 🙁

Im actually more likely to buy an 780ti on the price drop, when maxwell is release properly. need a waterblock for mine so id be waiting even longer for one for the new cards.

Your never going to be able to keep up with Graphics cards unless you got money to burn. generally its just buy the best with what you have. i have patience lol

Oh sorry I meant that I already bought the 770 but the previous card I was using was the 6870. I can still return the 770 but I am not sure if should. The 780 is expensive but I could possibly try to buy it or just wait for the 8xx. The thing is to though, that there are a couple of games out today that can't be maxed with a 770, and some that will be released soon (Witcher 3, The Division, Far Cry 4) that may not be capable of being maxed out with a 770 and that would mean that a 770 would not be as future-proof as I wished. It's understandable that within a two or three, any card of the current generation will have trouble maxing future games out, but within months seems far too soon.

[EDIT: I was planning not to upgrade again for at least 3 or 4 years.]

I probably won't be able to afford another 770 and so I was in search for the optimal single-GPU card that would last me for 3 to 4 years of great gaming. Sure I won't be able to max out games then with a single card that I buy today, but at least for a year or 2, I was expecting to do so.

Would the R9 290 be a good upgrade from the 770? As I said before, I can return my week old 770 and exchange it for a R9 290. Would it be a worthwhile upgrade as it does have 2GB more VRAM and is more powerful than the 770.

Right now the ASUS R9 290 is on sale for $439.99 while the Sapphire Tri-X is at $499. I heard the ASUS cooler has problems with the 290 but is it worth spending $60 more for the Tri-X?

[Edit: Also the Gigabyte version is on sale at Newegg.ca for $399.99. Which of the three is worth it?]
