Solution
the stock intel cooler should be more than fine on the low wattage 4150. put it on silent mode in the bios and remove .02 to .05 vcore out of the chip.

the intel boxed cooler is the same unit used on much higher wattage i5/i7s and they are ok running stock speeds. most can get a few extra 100 mhz overclock with the stock cooler.

Solution
The i3 cooler isn't the same as the i5/i7 cooler - the i3 heatsink is all aluminium with a TDP of 55W, the i5/i7 heatsink is aluminium with a copper base and a TDP of 77W.

The i3 cooler is still absolutely fine for the i3 though, otherwise it wouldn't be fit for purpose. The only reasons to change it are overclocking (not applicable since non-K), noise or aesthetics.

the 2500k stock cooler i had is exactly the same as the 3220 used in my parents basic computer, same part number. i guess its possible intel changed things with haswell.

hmm i guess your right i stand corrected. the i3 was a used part, my 2500k was brand new. i believe the person i got it from upgraded so they very well may have gave me the i5/i7 cooler. no wonder the 3220 with fresh grease would only hit 55c running prime.
