Stock Fan Won't Fit Motherboard?

I have the GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard and the AMD FX-8350 CPU and I'm pretty sure they're compatible. But I couldn't fit the fan onto the motherboard for the life of me. I actually ended up breaking the CPU I pushed so hard but the latches were just a tiny bit too short. I'm returning my CPU for a new one, but I'm worried the same thing will happen. What's wrong?

I just carefully placed the CPU in and gently pushed it in. I installed the cooler by placing it on the CPU and putting the latch onto one sides hook then I couldn't put it on the other because it was too short.

Don't screw in one side fully. Give it a few twist, then put a screw on the diagonal end and screw it in with a few twist. Then do the same for the other two (if applicable). Then, in the same order that you screwed them in, give each one a few twist. Keep doing it in this order until all are tightened. Do not screw one side too much. A few twists, then move one.

It isn't screws, it's cooler clips onto a mounting lug.

Oh, you mean a stock cooler. So sorry. You would first align all the 4 mounts into the holes. Don't push them in until you aligned them. Once you have aligned them, keep them aligned and clip the first one in. Then clip the one diagonal from it. From there, clip the other two.

Sorry how unspecific I'm being, I can't describe look at a picture of the 8350. It's only two clips. And there are no holes. I'd post a picture if I could. But it's two hooks on the fan and two things to hook onto on a retention frame on the motherboard.

Sorry that was my fault. Starting over. So you clip one end (the end without the blue lever) onto the motherboard, then you align the lever side and while aligning it, you would twist the lever.

That's what I was doing. It was just too short.

I'm not exactly sure... I put the CPU back in, but this time it clicked and went in deeper. Then my fan fit.
