I own both the Samsung and LG drives. I saw that article a couple weeks ago and applied the firmware patch. Both drives serve their purpose. The LG drive is quieter when watching DVD's and the Samsung drive flies when ripping with the new firmware. If you don't rip movies, the LG drive works just fine.

Once upon a time there was a site that kept track of all these drives and had ratings for everything. I think it's no longer around or out of date.
I bought my HP drive for about $100 based on that site, and I've been happy since. I used to go through a drive a year, but have had this one a very long time. Maybe 5 years now.

I had the Asus drive, and it died rather quickly.

In my primary PC, I currently use the Lite-On iHAS422 with an optiarc drive. In all honesty, I don't notice that much difference in performance over my previous drives. However, I won't buy the Asus drive again because it died on me in under a year.

Thats good information...

For years i prefer reliability as the more important feature..Toshiba and Sony had done extremely well for me. If these were cars the odometers would > 150K miles of read/write cycles.

I had my LG GGW-H20L for almost 1.7 years. So far I'm pretty please with it.
