I have a very, very large number of DVDs (I estimate well in excess of 1,000, spanning movies, TV shows, etc.). I recently purchased a 4TB external hard drive and have been ripping the main title + audio/subtitles out of each DVD with MakeMKV. The resulting MKV files range between 3.0 and 4.0 GB, usually. I estimate I will have space for roughly 1,000 movies on my existing hard drive. Ideally, I would like to fit all of my DVD collection (excepting Blu-Ray discs, which I still have few enough of to make storing on shelves a feasible prospect for years to come).

My concern is that I will need more space, and simply having two external hard drives is not an attractive nor efficient solution. I realize now that I will need to compress the files somehow.

The problem is that I do not really want to give up much in the way of audio or video quality. What utilities/codecs can I use that will preserve most of the quality of the existing files while reducing their size? All files are in MKV format, most with 1-2 audio tracks and a subtitle track. I would like to preserve the ability to switch between audio tracks and turn on/off subtitles at will, if at all possible.

That's what I was afraid of. I tried compressing one to DIVX with "AnyVideoConverter" and ended up with blurry, indistinct subtitles and wretched-sounding audio.
