Hi,

Specs-

INTEL I7 8700k
MSI 3060TI
16gb RAM
1TB HDD
500GB SSD M.2
WINDOWS10

So my motherboard is MSI Z370 A-PRO i currently have a HDD and a SSD in the m2_1 slot i want to add a 1tb SSD into the motherboard as the 500gb just isn't enough with todays gaming. I see i have 3 PCIE slots
  • 1x PCI-E 3.0 x16 @ x16
  • 1x PCI-E 3.0 x16 @ x4
  • 4x PCI-E 3.0 x1 @ x1
Can i use any of these slots for SSD for gaming? and if so which slot is best sorry my knowledge on this is minimal.

Thanks.

You won't get any performance benefit over a standard SATA SSD.

The first 16x slot is obviously used by the GPU, that one is wired directly to the CPU. According to the manual the rest of them are wired to the chipset (PCH) so none will interfere with the GPU. The slot you want to use is the second full length slot as that is 4 lanes.

As others have suggested though, there is no benefit right now beyond a SATA SSD, that will change at some point but not for a while. As you only have one slot left for an NVME, you could get a 1TB or 2TB SATA SSD now (I'd recommend the MX500) and then add a second NVME later if you need it.

If you were going NVME now then I'd recommend the Samsung 980. A cheaper alternative would be the WD Blue SN550.
