Strange 640 x 480 sorcery

Friends, I built a pretty decent rig about six months ago and only lately (3 weeks) I have found that in rebooting I am greeted with a 640 x 480 resolution--something my graphic card doesn't even support were I to try and manually set it as such. I don't think the images will post properly though I'm using IMG through imgur, and added the hyperlink version right below it, but you should be able to retrieve the url and see what I mean either way. The preview shows blank to me 🙁

Oddly enough, going through the motions of setting the resolution properly resolves it, but like some people, I shut my machine off every day, or will discover the resolution set back to its fetal state after waking from sleep. It's supposed to be at the full resolution below:

Has anyone encountered this that might have suggestions? I could really use the advice. My specs should be in my signature below if it's still there, otherwise I'll edit/add it.

I am very sad/humiliated to announce that this whole stupid thing was resolved by, on a whim, doing a system restore to a week before I got creative, and while this didn't fix it, I forgot entirely about msconfig -> normal startup. Now everything is working properly. I accept all laughter/scrutiny/shakes of the head for this.

Finding a way to delete this post.
