Hello, I have a 2TB HDD that I've had for a long time, a few days ago there has been a weird sound coming from the PC, it only stops when I unplug the SATA and power wires from the hard disk. I have a 250GB SSD as well, that doesn't seem to have any issues.
When powering up my PC that sound comes up, it takes a lot more to load than usual, but after it does, it doesn't detect it in "My Computer", it's just the SSD.
The windows is installed on the SSD, just so we're 100% clear.
Here's a video with the exact sound, it's easier to hear after 00:10: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVzH2aJmm8U

I came across someone saying you could salvage the data using an external hard drive enclosure. How would that work?

It occurs to me that it may already be too late for that - - - besides, if the PC isn't detecting it you've got to get over that hurdle first. External HDD enclosure is worth a try I guess - - you can buy them from Amazon and other online vendors. You stick the drive in to the enclosure, then plug it in to a USB port (preferably when Windows is up & running, not before).

But trying to salvage data is a bad place to be -- you never heard about keeping backups?

Good Luck with the bad drive anyhow.

As strange as it might sound, no, I haven't really been using that service at all. However, considering the situation I ended up in because of that, I might start from now on. How do backups work?
