strange colored strip when trying to boot.

Ive had my pc for about 7 years and lately when trying to boot, after the bios screen it will displayed, this strange pixelated strip of color will apear. It will than get bigger, as if it were typing the pixels, for about 2 min and then freeze. If i keep rebooting it eventually it will boot but it might take 5 to 10 times over the course of an hour. I have no idea what could be causing this.

All my parts should be functional as it still will boot eventally but here they are just in case.

Windows 7
Mother board: MSI-880GMA E55
CPU: AMD Phentom II
Graphics: GTX 960
Power supply: SS-620GB, 620w
RAM: Hyper x genesis, 4x 4gb
+ 2 hard drives and a cd drive

Try a different monitor. If it still happens then it's more than likely an issue with your GPU.

I tried it with several different monitors and it doesn't help. I don't think its a problem with the graphics card either because I was having the issue before I upgraded my graphics card last summer.

Any other ideas?
