strange graphics card problem, working but not working

Ok so my issue is a bit odd, as good as i can tell the graphics card is working, my screen is plugged into the vga on the graphics card, screen displays fine, fan spins, all that jazz, but my graphics score is 1.0 and it is telling me the computer is using "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" and that seems to be the only option when i went to find the graphics card in control panel, it is stoping me from playing all games accept solitare and chess and is doing my head in, it even has some long winded message pop up about its graphics capabilities when trying to play chess, do i need to do something to fire it up or what? I dont know how else to ask about this issue

Sound like you haven't installed any drivers for the card. You can download them from the manufactures website (NVidia or AMD), without them your card won't do much but the basics. If you have installed the drivers, then they can't be working properly, so uninstall and re-install.
