My daughter has a strange homepage showing up when she opens
IE (WinXP home). The address bar says
"res:\\xxxxx.dll/xxxxx.html". I forget the exact syntax.
When I try to change the homepage in internet options, close
IE, then reopen IE, the same thing shows up again.

How can I get rid of the res:\\.....

Thanks -- Frank

One might also consider starting by not using IE for one's general
surfing. Malware written to use a defect in IE is powerless against
Netscape/Mozilla, Opera, etc.

I`ve got a few tips on setting up a "rival" to Lavasoft Adaware - Spybot
Search & Destroy, as well as links to other anti-hijack / spyware apps
here:

www.phoenixbbs.co.uk

All these programs are free - do not be fooled by some commercial
variants that tell you there`s a problem, but want money to "fix" them.
Some commercial apps are legitimate, but the free ones do as good a job
in my experience. Some free ones are that good, they have been hijacked
themselves and re-sold as a seperate product.

For those technically inclined, I was a little disturbed by a report of a
machine i`d helped scan (via telephone), whose owner then decided to try
a "commercial" scamware app - I decided to give it a whirl on my machine,
and it was reporting several "infected" .gif image files 😛 (the cust
had their head too far up their a$$ to listen to what I was telling them)
