A long time ago, when my character was young and fresh, I had just run into
Balmora, having barely survived an attack by something or other, I forget
what. I needed a bed, and badly, so I went to the Mage's Guild, which was
the closest. Went downstairs, and tried to take a nap, and immediately was
woken up by the sound of an assassin coming to kill me. Well, as young and
fresh as this character was, and given he only had a sliver of life on him
at the time, I knew I was in no shape to face one of these guys. (I'd
fought and killed 1 or 2 before, but only when I was at full health
before-hand, and only just barely at that.) Since none of the half dozen
powerful wizards that live down there deemed fit to lift a finger to help me
out, and since the Assassin was guarding the stairs and the only way out, I
was trapped. In a moment of inspiration, I remembered that I could go to
the Guild Guide and get cheap transport to any of the other Mages' Guilds.
I think I went to Caldera or Ald'ruhn. Used the bed there, and gave myself
a pat on the back for quick thinking. I would have completely forgetten the
incident, except that something happened recently to remind me of it.
For watever reason, it was a very long time before I went back to the
Balmora Mage's Guild. I did some quests for the people up north, went down
to Vivec and worked for them a bit, explored some ruins here and there, even
visited the Shrine of Azura just out of curiosity. When I finally came back
to the Balmora Guild Hall, I discovered that the assassin had apparently
been sitting there for weeks diligently awaiting my return. Well, by now, I
was 10 or 15 levels higher, had some pretty cool gear, and I was at full
health to boot, so I made short work of him. Then I noticed that something
was missing. Or rather, someone. The orcish mage that sells potions down
there, forgot his name, was completely gone. Is it possible that he
challenged the assassin and paid for it with his life? If so, I feel bad
for skipping town on him, but he didn't feel like helping me out while I was
there, so I would have thought that the assassin would just ignore him.
Also, none of the other residents of the Guild seemed to have gone missing,
so I can't imagine that the assassin could have gotten away with just
killing him. Heck, once when I accidentally attacked one of them (hit mouse
button instead of spacebar with weapon drawn - oops...), they all ganged up
and made short work of me. I don't think the assassin would be able to
stand a chance against all those seasoned wizards. But he was still alive,
and the orcish guy was gone. I'm a bit worried, as I know that he has some
significance with some of the major plot-related quests, and it might ruin
my game to have him not there. Unless his disappearance is a specific,
intended plot event, but if that's the case, none of the other mages have
anything to say about it, which is surprising. Did I screw up? And if so,
is there anything I can do about it?
