Hey all!

When I pick up and move my laptop it makes a strange noise. I'm not sure what is going on. Do I need to clean the inside? Does the fan need replacing? Is the fan slightly off and it might just need to be tightened?

I did this quick video of the strange noise - https://www.dropbox.com/s/17ssz7kct3ujpl0/IMG_1075.MOV?dl=0

I know it's all speculation but hopefully someone can provide some insight as I'm in Asia right now and I need to order replacement parts from Australia for a few other things and I'd like to do it all in one go. Then I can take it to a shop here locally and get them to fix it all. They tried to get parts for an Australian laptop but couldn't find anything. I tried a few shops and no one could help so it's on me to order the parts myself.

Thanks!!

Are you moving your laptop like that when it's actually turned on?

Do you have a HDD in that laptop or an SSD?

If you do have an HDD in that laptop please stop shaking it like that. This is not something you should be shaking. Especially if it's running. You can hear the fan speeding up when you stop shaking it so the laptop IS running.

That sound is really weird. There is almost nothing moving in a laptop except the fan and the HDD if you have one in it.

I don't have a HDD. It's an SSD.

And no I don't move it like that when I use it. I just notice it when I move my laptop around the house. I was just moving it like that for the video to show what's going on.

So would you just replace the fan?

This is the first time I hear a sound like that coming from a laptop to be quite honest and I have been building, repairing and troubleshooting computers for like 25 years. I said the fan because this is the only thing I see moving in your laptop. It doesn't mean it's a fan tho. It could be the mechanism of the CD/DVD player if you have one on your laptop moving inside because it's broken (I'm only saying this because of the dented gear thing inside that player which would sound like that if it was sliding freely). Could be a plastic/metal piece broken rattling on something because of a tight space not letting it go loose in the laptop case. The best thing for you would be to bring this laptop to someone who can open it and move it while it's open to hear where its coming from exactly or if you know how to open your laptop do it. Open it. Tilt it a bit. You will find the culprit very fast. It's hard to pinpoint what it is from the outside while just moving it like you did.

Does it make this sound when it's completely turned off and not running?

Good luck! 😀
