Strange PC Problem - Continuous fast & short beeps

Hi,

I am new to the forum. After a lot of attempts to diagnose a recent
PC problem I think that I need some help...

The problem appeared out of the blue. When the PC starts the booting
routine, after the post I get continuous fast and short beeps that do not
stop. The strange thing is that I have video, I can see the BIOS boot
screen normally but the computer is slugish as hell! In the BIOS screen
you press a key and you get a response 8 seconds later...
Something similar might happen if you try to boot a PC but you keep
pressing continuously a random keyboard key. In my case the problem
is the same even if you do not connect any keyboard or mouse.

The setup:

Motherboard ASUS CUSL2-C
CPU Intel P3 1.4Ghz Tualatin on a 370 converter socket
Memory 512Mb PC133
400W FSP power supply
Video Card Radeon 8500DV All In Wonder

The PC was working perfectly for years now. I leave it on all the time
with no problems. Two days ago I switched it off and on and that was it..
It looks like the motherboard is working because it goes though the POST
sucessfully and it will tell you if you remove the memory or the vga card.
I've replaced the PSU but the problem remains. I removed the
motherboard and powered it with only the PSU the CPU, VGA and one
memory module. Same problem...

Any help would be appreciated!
Regards,
George.

First off, do you know how many times it's beeping, and what BIOS version your using? Those are 2 key factors to look up what the problem is. Also, does it give you any kind of error message?

If you don't know then one very simple thing could be that it's the keyboard. Did you spill anything on it, or is a key stuck down? I've seen it be something as simple as that. Try rebooting but do not have the keyboard plugged in.

If it still happens, then it could be bad Video Card Memory or the RAM is going bad. Try to take out the video card and see if it stops, and/or try different sticks of memory if you can.

Another thing could also be that the CMOS battery on the motherboard is dying. It's pretty obvious to see were it in on the motherboard. Try to replace that if you can if you still can't fix the problem. If all else fails, then there's some type of permanent damage on the motherboard somehow (or it's just getting so old that it's starting to break down and fail).

That's the best that i could find, hope it helps. Good luck.

Hello,

Thank you for your suggestions.
The PC is beeping non stop! It does not give any kind of error and
I can access the BIOS but every keypress takes at least 8 seconds
to register. Same thing happens with no keyboard or mouse
connected.

If I remove the VGA card, the motherboard gives me the beep error
codes detecting a missing VGA card and then the continuous short
beeps go on non stop.

I have just replaced the CMOS battery with a brand new one and
I still get the same error. I have also tried with a single RAM stick.

Any other suggestions?
Could it be that there is a kind of short connection in the PS/2
circuit that behaves like a pressed keyboard key?

Thank you.
George.

Hm... the only other thing that I could think of would that if it's an old motherboard, it's starting to wear down. As much as we hate it, things break over time. How long have you had that computer/motherboard for, if it's only 5+ years then it could be getting faulty.

Hi,

I am using the pc for 10 years now... It might be the motherboard indeed.
Do you think that the CPU might be responsible as well?
I am using a Tualatin 1.4Ghz P3 CPU (the speed limit of that motherboard)
on a converter socket on top of the 370 socket.

Thanks.

Well for 10 years I'm surprised it's still alive. :p Yes, it could be the CPU as well (maybe the motherboard and CPU). The only way to actually find out would be to use a different motherboard or use a different Processor. :p Both of those could be a bit difficult and a bit much, so I would just pull some of the parts off (if you want to keep some if you needed any) and throw the rest away.

Honestly (in my opinion), after 10 years? You might as well just buy a new Computer or build a new one. Haha, I am almost 100% sure that thing is living on it's very, very, last life.

Hopefully this helps, but overall; it's just so old that it's finally breaking now! I'll give you props or keeping it alive for 10 years though. xD

I have the same problem with a gateway computer, very fast continuous deep that never stops. Even if the keyboard and mouse is not connected the same problem happens.
comes up with no problem soon as it tries to post that's when this continuous beep happens.

I replaced the hard drive and that fixed the problem.
I was assuming it was a bad PS2 port on the motherboard.
Because that act just like a stuck key on the keyboard.
strangely enough replacing the hard drive fix the problem.
Installed a brand-new hard drive and completely reinstalled the operating system.

Doesn't make any sense I know.
