Strange USB Drive Issue

I'm having a strange issue when I try to connect a USB 3.1 drive to my computer. I just built my first PC and I'm using it in a living room setup (connected to a TV / receiver). I pull out the keyboard / mouse, etc when I need to use the system, placing them on the coffee table, which I've integrated a USB hub into. I plug the hub in and then use a USB extension cable to connect the hub to the PC when I'm using it.

When I plug in my USB drive (it's a Corsair Voyager GTX 512 GB for reference), it kills all of the power in the hub temporarily. After a few seconds, it turns back on and everything is normal. This happens every time I connect it to the hub.

On top of this, I'm having a very difficult time using it. I've tried formatting it, changing between GUID / MBR, etc. It works flawlessly on my Mac (formatted to exFAT for compatibility with both Windows and Mac OS), but it's having a lot of issues with Windows, for whatever the reason. Any ideas?

It still does the same thing when I plug it into the PC. All the USB ports go out for a couple of seconds and then come back on. When I try to load the disk management settings in Windows, it takes forever to load - when the drive is not connected, it works very fast. I'm starting to think this is just a faulty USB drive. I don't understand it. It works absolutely flawlessly when I plug it into my Mac...

That could very well be the case. It also could be because its usb 3.1... have you tried all the ports in the pc?

I've tried several, but not all. The system has about 12 ports and I've probably tried 8 of them, both USB 3.0 and 3.1 ports. Nothing works. Can't format the drive in Windows Disk Management (when it finally loads), as it throws an I/O error.

Try updating the usb drivers on device manager. You might also find something on corsairs site.

It's still very weird. lol I managed to get it formatted and such, but it still kills all my USB power when I plug it in and it also seems to create random files / change drive names, etc. This is the most bizarre thing I've ever seen in all my years working with computers.

Yeah, I agree. Send it back, It seems faulty.

I just ordered another from Amazon. Will test with that one to see if it gives me the same issues. It also effects my software. My RGB cuts out momentarily too, when the USB ports lose power.

Sounds like a power issue for some reason.... Let me know if the new one works, I'd really like to know.

Good luck!
