This is the shroud that is meant for that heatsink being used.

Please take a minute to figure out why the shroud is so important to how that fan functions.

Try an after market heat sink or one of the new BTX sinks with a shroud build on. If you are unable to find a BTX case at the local computer store or a heatsink with a shroud I could hook you up with a manufacture that would let you guys sample a unit.

The design is to move air downwards onto the motherboard. You are not moving any air down at all and reducing the fan performance to about 15 cfm when it is made to do 80 cfm when done correctly. Right now it is just disturbing the hot air around it and not pulling fresh air from outside the case.

Try it and watch the temps drop and stay down.

Take the fan shroud off your car and see if it overheats in traffic.

I know it is Intels fault for not educating you guys enough and it is unacceptable to have to buy an aftermarket heatsink when so many of those fans were shipped in retail.

apparently not. read the third update on the german site, or the translation in this forum.. they initially used a fan for the 2.8D, not a BTX or shroud fan. Or so they say..

Heya Fug

The hsf they used initially was the wrong one. It'll be out shortly that they were using one for up to a 2.8, when they were supposed to be using the other one which was designed for that cpu. If you know german they already have it out on the german side. It's still running a bit hot though, so no doubt a shroud would change matters. I certainly hadn't heard you're supposed to use a shroud with those cpus. Is it just dual core sets, or are all p4's supposed to be using shrouds (notes that all dell comps have shrouds; that i've worked on anyway).

Intel has reccomended the Intake funnel or shroud on all cases since the introduction of the Prescott CPU.
I was going to say pretty much the same thing, but quote this from Intel:
Thermally advantaged chassis: A chassis that has been designed to meet the required thermal specification of a 38oC fan inlet temperature for the Intel® Pentium® 4 processor Extreme Edition, or Intel® Pentium® 4 processors based on 90nm.
