so i just got a new mobo and a new i5-4690k and i downloaded prime 95 to stress test and cpu thermometer to look at the temp and when i start the stress test it gets up to 95 like right away. Also i was playing cs go and it would slowly go to 80 then slowly drop down to 69. this is my first pc build

gluv165,

Do NOT run any versions of Prime95 later than 26.6. Here's why:

Core i 2nd, 3rd and 4th Generation CPU's have AVX (Advanced Vector Extension) instruction sets. Recent versions of Prime95, such as 28.5, run AVX code on the Floating Point Unit (FPU) math coprocessor, which produces unrealistically high temperatures. The FPU test in the software utility AIDA64 shows the same results.

Prime95 v26.6 produces temperatures on 3rd and 4th Generation processors more consistent with 2nd Generation, which also have AVX instructions, but do not suffer from thermal extremes due to having a soldered Integrated Heat Spreader and a 35% larger Die.

Please download Prime95 version 26.6 - http://windows-downloads-center.blogspot.com/2011/04/prime95-266.html

Run only Small FFT’s for 10 minutes.

Use only Real Temp to measure your Core temperatures, as it was designed specifically for Intel processors: Real Temp - http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2089/real-temp-3-70/

Your Core temperatures will test 10 to 20C lower with v26.6 than with v28.5.

it still reached about 95 degress it just took a little longer

Then your stock cooler is not properly attached. It's a common problem. What you typically find is that one of the push-pins has popped loose.

You can troubleshoot this problem by firmly pushing on each corner of the cooler for about 20 seconds while watching the temperature. When you see a significant drop in temperature, you've found the loose push-pin.

Please refer to this Guide for the proper installation of Intel's stock cooler:

that didnt really do anything but i did put the cooler down on the cpu but then had to reposition it becausre the plug wouldnt reach and some thermal paste came off on the cpu would that be aproblem?

yup that might be the cause of it, remove your cpu cooler and clean the thermal paste on your processor and heatsink, make sure none is left and apply new thermal paste (pea/grain size).

Are you saying that it hasn't been plugged in?
