Strict budget, new build to replace old Core 2 duo..i3, i5? Ideas?

I pieced together the system I'm using about 2 years ago from already heavily used parts on less then a shoe strong budget, under $100. Current system is limited to 4gb of ram I'm feeling the constraints with windows 7 x64 CPU is a Core 2 Duo 6400 (2.13 ghz) mobo is an Asus P5LD2 GPU Saphire Extreme HD3850. 4GB (3.2 usable by windows) Crucail DDR2

I'm looking at staying under $300, I know it's not much but I'm really just looking for a bit more speed but more important usable memory.
CPU wise I'm aiming towards a Core i3-3220
Mobo ASROCK
RAM Samsung or Corsair XMS 8gb DDR3 (4gb x 2)
Video stick with onboard or reuse anciant HD3850?
Sound stick with onboard

Reuse:
HD: Samsung 1TB
SATA Optical Drive
Power Supply: Earthwatts 380 watt (not the green case, older model, runs great)
Video Card or jsut use unboard?

Went with a AMD APU a10 5800k. It has integrated graphics that beats the intel ones and the hd 3850. Went with fast ram to get more performance from the apu. Corsair ram is about $6 more than cheapest ones (patriot). I went with a really good mid/high asrock board but you can save up to $20 by going lower end models. You can also buy a 6670 to crossfire with the apu but at that point you are better off buying a dedicated card like the 7750.
The intel integrated graphics are still weak and likey won't be faster than the hd3850 (but intel does support dx11 so newer games are "playable"

Id go for intel xeon 1230V2 cpu. For GPU Id take GTX 660 or if you do not need Cuda.

Corsair XMS are good. I do prefer more Gskill. But thats just me. It is fine if you take
corsair XMS 8GB memory set.

That build is $115 over budget before even accounting for graphics card -_-

Also, you forgot a CPU cooler, Xeon's don't come with a boxed cooler.

I'd also say although there's room to add GPU later, until that point he's stuck with a 3850, not a great way to go about it.

Thanks everyone for the help would the ASROCK H77 for a few more dollars be any better (future proof) then the B77...seems to have a few more slots PCI etc... and I'm not sure the difference in chipsets B77/H77 which would be better performance wise.

Which Asrock h77 mobo are you referring to?

Also in short it's not likely to be making a huge difference which board you go for in a budget rig like this. The H77 is slightly better, the b75 has a few features disabled like raid, ISRT, only one sata 6gb/s connection.

Ok, as mentioned there's little difference between the two. But for a budget build like this it will be making no difference to you, either board is fine.

Seems you are correct about the cooler. My advice still stands though. Getting a xeon at this price point isn't a smart move.

Tbh i wouldn't advise getting a xeon at any point unless your building a server/workstation.

But still, i know you love your xeons so i won't go into it much more. I'm sure the op's smart enough to make an informed choice.

A simple mistake, from what i'd read previously they didn't come with coolers.

If you want to talk about researching something, go google about xeons and you'll see most people are recommending against them being used in gaming rigs.

Thanks mikerockett, leaning towards most the parts so far...just trying to figure ram out...I've used Crucial in most all my builds for as far back as I can remember. Doesn't really look like it would pay to go Crucial this build (price/performance) so I'm deciding between Kingston and Gskill...I just really don't know enough about Gskill.

Also is the ASrock boards that picky with ram? A few reviews I've run across say to make sure you check Asrock's website with ram before purchasing as the board can be picky. Can't say I'm very impressed with there qualified memory page, to say the least lol.

Well I got the ram so far, $36 for 8gb of Kingston Blu...seems like to good of a deal to pass up. From there I'll probably order the Asrock H77M and the i3 3220.

Anyone ever order a mobo and or processor from Amazon? I never even knew they sold them till the other day. I've dealt with Newegg for the past 12 or 13 years, but I have some credit at Amazon I'd like to use up.
