Struggling to install it right. Hexagon screws won't stay on backplate so I had to super glue them on. Even then it feels like the backplate wants to slide out and won't fit on totally evenly.

So does the fan have to be on the side without the extra metal bit or does it matter? Which way in my case should it face, towards the optical disk drive bays? (I'm using the fractal R5, default configuration) And which side of the fan should face outward, the one that has just their logo or the one that displays the rpm? None of this is made clear in their instruction booklet and their video isn't much help either.

Solution
Fan to the black side , too much paste mate.
A blob in the middle would have done, no need to spread it.
Leave it now, wipe a bit from all around the edge or it will seep out when you fit the cooler.
fan facing optical drives (front of case) - the multicoloured logo showing.
Air blows into the heatsink & out the back to the case exhaust.

You shouldnt have had any trouble with the backplate - I have a sneaky feeling you have it back to front.
