I was just looking through EBay and noticed this auction.

They say the chip has 20 off the wall sound files in it. I have not
seen or heard of this ROM. I wanted to know if anyone has it installed
in their machine. Do you like it? Can it be downloaded anywhere so I
can check it out on Pin-Mame and see if it is worth getting?

This has been discussed recently... Seems they were not intended (by
the original designers) to get out.

Anyways, here is a list of the stuff it says:

Not my cup, but hey.

I heard these years ago in Steve Ritchie's personal STNG machine, which
was at a collector's house. I wanted to get a copy, but the owner was
sworn not to let them out. Then at this years CAX show, I inquired
about them with Steve himself but he didn't have much of anything to
say about them (say "Shutdown"). Finally, I heard of a source for them
a couple weeks ago and got them. I have yet to install them in my
STNG, as there are about 5-6 chips to change, but I'll do it soon.

Well I am working on getting a copy. If I can acquire them I would be
more then happy to host them on my site and let everyone know where to
get them. I'll also send a copy to John Wart. I'm sure he would be
happy to burn them cheaper then $50.00.

My Thoughts,

There is one less chip on the sound board from the orignals, and you change
the cpu chip. We have covered this before at least the quotes and how they
work in the game, well worth 50 bucks, but why pay 50 when after a few
select people buy them will probably share them with their friends and they
will share with their friends and then everyone who wants them will have
them. Nothing touches Demo Man for quotes during game play but funny still.

I installed these tonight. I only listened to the flipper button
quotes in attract mode, are there any game sound diffrences also?

Instead of hosting them on a site, just upload them to
alt.binaries.emulators.misc .. instant global distribution :D

Between here and the Pin MAme people. That would cover just about
everyone who would be interested in them. I am all for global
distribution.

I spent a couple hours playing my STNG with the special/silly roms
tonight, which I was able to get from one of the vendors in this thread
for $44. I have owned my NG for almost 10 years and thought I had seen
and heard it all, until now.

To begin with, there are the twenty some-odd silly speech quotes from
almost the entire cast in attract mode heard by presing both flipper
buttons that we already know about. These quotes are also scattered
randomly throughout game play, in addition to things not on the list
already mentioned. Things like "We will never surrender unless you pay
us enough money" at the start of Borg Multiball, or "Begin Stimulation"
at the start of battle sim to name a couple.

A silly quote is also randomly activated at the start of a game. Also,
the "warp" sound that you normally hear when pressing the start button
in multi player games is now heard at the start of a one player game.
Occasionally I heard the usual "Welcome to the Enterprise" at game
start, and was disapointed!

Other speech never heard before is played at the end of a game during
the match sequence, and is not silly. Things like, "Our experience in
the Final Frontier was most remarkable", "The crew's performance was
commendable during Q's last visit", and "While we have made significant
discoveries, we must realize this is only the beginning". There's
probably more...

Smaller differences I also noticed were the flipper return lane sounds,
which resemble Picard's doorbell, is slightly different (longer). I
also thought the upper rollover lanes sounded diffeernt at first, but
now I'm not certain.

That's all I can recall at the moment, but I'm sure there is more. Was
it worth it? I would say so. New sounds coming out of a game that is
almost 15 years old is a treat IMHO. As far as the ~$45 price;
Considering there are 7 rom IC's to burn for this special software (6
on the sound board and one on the CPU) instead of the usual 1 or 2, I
don't think the price is out of line.

More on this story as info comes in. Enjoy!

James,

Thanks for the first hand update. Would you say that the games has
become absurd during game play, or during game play does it keep it's
serious them? Are the silly quotes just in attract mode or have they
been implemented into the game mode?

Thanks,
Jeff

When the files are available, you should be able to burn both sets
together using a larger eprom and switch back and forth with a toggle
switch. I wouldn't switch to the new set myself, but if I can have
both, it could be interesting...

that would clear your high scores each time you flip - differing
checksums on the roms will wipe the ram. Unless this checksum test is
hacked, but then you could corrupt your Nvram

I didn't realize the checksum would be different. So, if the "special
chip set" is installed just to check it out, the high scores would be
gone? Or, only if both sets were installed together?
