So starting to see games get to the lvl were the 290x just cant cut it on ultra at 60 fps, plus I like eye candy like msaa and shit....

so im pondering/thinking of going for something and then moving to 1440 screen or so......... would it honestly be best to just do crossfire? im just worried it wont be smooth no point in running 60 fps if the game is chopping and constant screen tearing, so my question here is how much has crossfire improved? will the 980 be worth the upgrade over the 290x? I can get a 980 for 489 atm new in box.

system is
fx 8350 @ 5ghz
crosshair iv
phantek cooler
8 gb ddr3 1600mhz
290x
cs650m gold rated psu

so either I can sell my 290x for prob 250-280 ez sale local and pay about 210? for a 980 or get another 290x for about 250, id also need a new psu but I could sell my old 1 for a good price still to cover that im sure

Solution

One 970 is the same as a 290x, get two of them, and you'll blow one 980 out of the water too and the 290x.
If you get a 290 to go with your 290x it will downclock the 290x to a 290. I run cf 290x at 4k and I really like it, if you have a case with good air flow and don't mind upgrading your psu I would go crossfire. It's going to give you much better performance then a single 980 in games with cf support.

so now I have another question I can get a pair of 970s local for 550 should I do that? or would even 1 970 be about he same as the 290x? I find the 290x isn't performing like I like I mean I max games out but when I look them up online I feel like every 1 got a better egg then me

My system is smooth with crossfire, the problem you are seeing with your 290x not performing like benchmark sites is because the new games being released are crazy cpu intensive, I think it's mostly dx11 not being able to use more then 1 core for drawcalls. It's the 8350 that is slowing your system down in new games and with that said it's going to bottleneck crossfire 290x's or sli 970's or likely one 980 because it sounds like it's already the bottleneck with your 290x in some new games you are playing.

I got a 4690k for my crossfire 290x 4k rig because there is no AMD cpu that will not bottleneck them, I love AMD put their cpu's are weak.

ok i agree there i just dont have aboard that supports sli haha so thats were im stuck.........

ok so heres were it gets tricky

970 online is about 300 bux
780ti is about 360
980 is over 500 or around 5
r9 290x is about 300 for 1 with a good cooler

i dont wanna spend the 500 for sure id like a single card that just ezer to mess with atm im trying to max out gta v can any one give me the best card for this...... the 290x isnt that great with gta and if i have to go green i guess its time im sick of how games do the bs i love the 290x but meh when every game is a gamble wtf do i do?

hmm dont kno why my mobile post never got on here, but i went with a single 970 im not sure over 200$ more on a 980 is just worth it........ i loved my 290x but it just seems like its a old style muscle car trying crush through the streets with pure power............. some times u need a few other parts other then 900hp

so i figured id try the 970 seems like it works much better with new tech and i can always upgrade through evga when i have the cash........... which is why i went with evga brand, also have a 290x for sale haha ill do 250 cash shipped to ur door if any one is interested
