Hi, I'm attempting to fix my sister's ASUS X555c laptop. She was running Windows 10, and stated that after clicking on a link her computer became mostly unresponsive. When I got there most applications would not open, indicating a permissions error. I could still get into settings, but could not open task manager, or most other useful tools.

I took the computer home, and loaded from a backup that she had saved from months earlier, but the computer still acted very sluggish, and I couldn't even open chrome or Edge. Finally I reset and reinstalled Windows 10. Last I looked it was at about 98%, but when I came back to it, it showed the following message:

"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation."

So I restarted, but it went straight back to this message. At this point I'm thinking it's either bad RAM or a bad hard drive. I opened up the laptop, only to discover that it has onboard ram, so I was unable to swap it out. It does have a hard drive I can easily remove, but I don't have a replacement handy.

I next created a bootable USB drive with ultimatebootcd, and tested it on my working PC. Unfortunately, I was unable to boot into into this USB. So I went into the BIOS and changed the USB to be priority 1, still nothing. I tried all of the "F" keys to try and get a boot selection screen, but currently I am stuck with either the installation error, or I can get into the BIOS. I did reset the BIOS to factory settings, but no change. I also tried a bootable USB w/ Linux to see if I could get in that way, still won't do anything else but BIOS or the install error.

I've tried everything I can think of, and would greatly appreciate any ideas. Thanks!
