Stuck in boot cycle

Hi all,

I'm not sure if this is the correct thread, so apologies if it isn't. My wife's computer started to enter a boot loop over the weekend, and we are at a loss as to what is causing it.

The computer is a Velocity Micro Edge Z40. Over the weekend, the PC froze, then restarted. At first, the monitor wouldn't detect the PC, but soon afterwards it entered into a boot loop. It beeps more than 40 times, shuts down briefly, then restarts. We couldn't get into safe mode at all. The next day, somehow, we got the PC out of the loop (we had been constantly pressing F12, but have no idea if that was ever a factor), and it booted normally. Nothing seemed to be amiss, so we started to use the PC only for it to freeze. It wasn't a normal freeze, though, as the display became very wavy. It was completely unresponsive, and we had no option but to shut it down by the plug. Then it went into the boot loop again.

We contacted the company, who speculated that it might be the graphics card, and suggested we try to remove it and then boot it to establish if it was. Unfortunately, it persisted with the boot loop. Is there anything else we can do? The company is now suggesting we ship it back to them or send it to a local repair shop. It's such an expensive process, though, so we are hoping there is something else we could try before that.

Thank you so much for your time,

Joel

Thank you for your reply! It's definitely a continuous, steady beeping. It's at least 40 beeps before it reboots and restarts. They are high frequency, short beeps. The one that sounds most like it in the link would be the ram issue, but we haven't added additional ram ourselves. Could it have been loosened or dislodged in some way?

yes. ground yourself before working inside the PC
Remove and securely insert the RAM then power the system and see if it is the same. if it is remove a stick of RAM and try to boot. if the same, swap ram sticks and try again.

Canned Grounding Rant-
shut down system and remove side panel. with the power cable plugged into the PSU touch a bare unpainted metal area of the case. (my favorite spot is an unpainted screw securing the PSU) once you have grounded yourself you can unplug the computers power cable from the PSU and can touch the system.
if you move your feet, or shuffle in your chair, plug in the cord, reground yourself and unplug again.
end canned rant-

Hi!

We've just tried taking out the ram sticks, swapping them too, but that continuous beeping and boot loop is persisting. Is there anything else we can try before taking it into a repair store?

Thank you again!

Joel
