I'm working on a friend's PC yesterday that is running at 100% CPU usage when it boots to the desktop. I suggested to come in Safe mode, still 100%, what the...?

I unchecked everything in the startup using "msconfig" and can you believe it's still doing 100%?

Upon looking at the Task Manager, the process seems to be "system" pegging out at 99%. 2nd from bottom of 21 processes running.
Same thing in Safe Mode with 15 processes running, system is 99%!

Very frustrating.
Has anyone seen this before or how to remedy this stuck full throttle CPU?

Specs:
XP Home Edition (legit)
AMD Sempron 3200
512 RAM

Any advice would help!
Thank you,
Del ;-)

Thanks for the reply and link,

It's the 2nd from the bottom, just "System".
Seems to be an XP OS problem. Darn...

I do see what you mean with "system.exe"
I wish it was a trojan that I could take out and
help the system's stability.

Anything in XP to stop it from freakin' out at 100%?

Thanks,
Del ;-)

Download and run Hijackthis. It will show you everything running and loaded as not everything shows up in task manager. Depending on your knowledge it should point you in the right direction. There are some forums where you can post a copy of the log and others will look at it and advise you. I just scan through and find what I dont recognize and search for it. Normally works for me.
