Stuck on black screen with error message

I recently bought a Gateway Touch Screen laptop (preloaded with Windows8) and started doing updates so I could eventually get Windows 8.1

The original update took about 40 mins just to get to 26%, then all of a sudden I got an error message saying "failure configuring Windows updates, reverting changes, do not turn off computer."

So I waited well over and hour and had had enough so I shut my laptop (didn't turn it off) for the night. When I went to check on it the next day it was still stuck on the same screen. I then decided to try restarting it - nothing. I did a hard reset- nothing.

So finally I started reading a bunch of forums and saw that it is a common problem. However in all the posts, people seem to still have access to the computers' functions (start button, control panel, etc.) Yet I don't. My computer is literally stuck on a black screen with that error message. I have tried pressing F8, which I then found out is essentially useless on Windows 8, I have tried waiting, tried pressing start, and now I am out of ideas, so if anyone has a solution I would greatly appreciate it.

Solution
Well the F8 key should perform some action once pressed? If possible you could try doing a repair or since it's a new laptop just reload the OS from scratch and start over.
