Well it sounds like you might have a failing hard drive but you can confirm that by testing it with the drive maker's diagnostic software for DOS which loads from a bootable CD which you have to make from a CD Image.
For all drive makes except WD, download SeaTools for DOS: http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/item/seatools-dos-master/

Use IMGBurn to create the CD (you can use any computer for this) from either of the above CD Images:

Boot your laptop from that CD.
