Studio XPS CPU upgrade?

I have a Studio XPS 9100 with a i7 960 and wanted to know if there were any possible i7 CPU's i could upgrade to with this system to keep up with CPU intensive video games.

The only way up is the 970,975 and 980. Porblem is those are stupidly expensive still on the second hand market and won't really give you a lot more. The only way for you to keep up now is get a new pc. Too bad you can't oc those i7's are great overclockers. Whats the specs of the whole system and what games struggle?

Cheapest one I could find on ebay was 899€ . Not worth it at all.

The OP never asked for the most cost effective upgrade. It's old enough that it's not worth throwing more money into it.

i7 960 at 3.20ghz
12 gb ram
msi gtx 970
corsair 650w psu
and 2 tb HDD with a 250gb SSD also

i figured my best option would be to buy a new motherboard+CPU and probably just transfer everything over to a new case right? but if there was like a under $300 solution I'd love to hear it.

Are you planning on reusing the DDR3 DIMMs? What are their exact specifications (i.e. brand, model number, voltage, etc.)?
