Stumped

Well, I have an Athlon 1.4 on an ECS K7S5A. The predicament I'm in is that I just "changed" cases from an old REALLY big tower to a smaller tower (maybe 5" shorter). Well, in the old tower the CPU temp never got above 49 or 50 C even at high load (more like 32 to 35 C on idle). Now, in the new case, the temp is 55 to 59 C idle, with the side panel off. I am stumped! Sure, getting a smaller case would have some effect on the CPU temp, but 24 C????? I checked my Windows monitor against the BIOS monitor and it's correct. I'm not sure exactly what happened - I remember picking the board up by the heatsink on the CPU when I was transferring it to the new case, but could that tiniest bit of stress affect the die/HS contact? I remember when I put it on originally (with AS2) it was a pain in the ass because the bracket was so damned stiff.
Well, I ordered some AS3 and I am going to reseat the HS. Maybe that will do something. Otherwise, I'm afraid to stress the system too much for fear of hearing *sizzle*.
Anyone have any ideas?

Also, do the HS and HS/Fan combos on the GeForce4 boards (i.e. Gainward Ti4600) come off so I can put AS3 on them too?

Thanks;

Maybe the heat sink compound cured with time, and when you picked it up went *crack*. Now there is air in there between some stuff.

I think you are doing the right thing, removing th HS and applying new compuond. Make sure that you clean the HS and CPU with alcohol. Use a good compound like Artic Silver III. Post your results. Take care.

Hang in there. It can only get better!

Well I ordered some AS3 (Arctic Silver 3) about a week ago, and hopefully it will be coming in soon. In the meanwhile, I got one of those Guster Air Duster cans and hosed down my power supply and the cpu HS/Fan. I knew they were dusty, but I didn't think it would make too much difference. Well, I was wrong. Now my idle temp is more like 46 C (as opposed to 56 C) (with the side of the case off) but I still think that's a bit high as well. So, I'll continue my plan of reseating the HS on the CPU and the GeForce card. Maybe the AS3 will knock it down a few more degrees. Just to make sure - the HS on the GeForce 4 cards can be removed right? I wasn't sure if it was removable or if some thermal adhesive was used.

Yes, it can be removed. Take out your GeForce card, remove the 2 clips (you push them up from the bottom), warm up the HS with a blow dryer, carefully pull up on one cornner of the HS. It will release. It does have an adheasive or thermal pad but the heat will soften up the pad. Good luck. Post your results. Take care.

I wasn't so much concerned about getting the HS off, but with making sure there would be good surface contact when I try and put it back on. If the pad is too thick then there's a possibility that the clips provided won't force the HS to make contact with the chips......

I had a problem with the L1 "unlock" on my old 850 Athlon so I had to pull off the HSF and re-lock it. The old AS2 was quite dried out, but it came off easily (both the HSF and the AS2). I just cleaned everything up with mild solvent after wiping most of it off. Then I did a final clean-up of CPU and HSF bottom with alcohol and put it back together.

Based on what I saw on mine (dry AS2), I wouldn't be surprised if lifting the board by the HSF disturbed the AS2 and it didn't seat back down properly.

I also saw a couple degree temp drop when all was said and done, mostly I believe, due to the dust removal. That's why I'd like to have better filtering of the intake air to my system.

Good Luck,

BW

Also, what sort of cooling do you have on the new case? same number/speed fans? same type of casefan vent grills? getting pleanty of airflow front to back?

The HS on your video card will not be a problem. I have allready had mine off and did what you are about to do. The clips are spring loaded. The will adjust for the lack of the pad. The pad isn't that thick anyway. Trust me, you will have no problems. I will tell you this, it will make you nervous pulling it off though... LOL... I did finally switch over to the Thermaltake copper HS and fan for my GeForce Ti 4600 card. It works well. Now Im getting ready to take the big plunge. Im going water cooling. Im getting a Koolance case. It should be in next week. I cant wait. Well GTG. good luck. Take care.

Well the case is smaller, but with the same number and placement of fans (and assumingly the same speeds..... it's the same setup just different case). Of course it's been a little wamrer in here lately (well it's november ya know), but not too much warmer.
I'd thought I messed it up by picking the board up by the cpu. Damn I remember how much of a pain it was getting the clip to clip when I first installed it. Looks like I'll have to do it again with some fresh AS3.

Can I remove the HS on the ram too on the geforce? I took a look at it and I see the clips for the gpu, but not for the ram.

Thanks.

Sorry buddy. I did not have HS on my video ram. So I cant tell you from experience, but I would thing that they would use the same type of thermal tape that they would use on the HS. SO I would say if you heat the ram up with a blowdrier. It sould come off. I know how you feel about removing the HS on your CPU. I'm glad that things cooled down when you cleaned them off. I have my computers on a cleaning scedule. every 4 months. Talk to you later. Take care.

Well, I got my AS3 in the mail. I applied it to the CPU and GPU. Actually, the GPU was the easier of the 2 - just 2 small clips and the Fan/HS pops right off. I thought the compound would be better, but it's just some of the "white goop". So the results? Well at idle I'm now at 45 C (1 or 2 C below what I was before) but then again, it's only been running for 30 minutes. AS says that it takes up to 75 hours of usage for the AS3 to really set into it's best performance. We'll see.
As far as the GPU is concerned, I don't really have a way to measure it's temp, although I'm not worrying about it (if they can ship it with the white goop and have noone complain, I think AS3 will not be a problem either). Any suggestions?

Thanks;;

Are you reading these temps with the case open or closed? The only thing that I can think of now is if the case is closed you may be getting some turbulance aroud the CPU HS and fan due to the chanke in case size and the addational rear fan. YOu have the CPU HS and fan trying to blow air in towards the CPU and the rear fan PULLING air across the HS fan. See what I mean? That is just a shot though. I have had that problem before. I made an air scoop for my HS fan that was facing forward to prevent this from happining. It worked pretty good. I made it out of a plastic milk jug ...lol.. Not the prettyist think, but it did work. If you go to www.tigerdirect.com and look at the HS and Fan combos they have you will see that some HS companys are using an air scoop on them. I did want to say that your temps for a 1.4 T-Bird chip, look good to me. Boy, if this dosne't help I don't know what to say... 🙁 Good luck. I do hope that this helps. Take care. Please post your results again.
