HI guys.

i've just recently bought i new system which has specs:

gigabyte z68-UD3
intel i5 2500k
8gb ddr3 ram
1 TB seagate TB
550W gigabyte odin gt psu

on this system is an HD 4870 1 gig which i didnt get new, it was part of my old pc.

unfortunately im getting frame skipping or stutterring in almost all of my games. im getting a better fps than I was on my old system, but its much less playable because of the stutter.

i have tried fiddling with all of the options (that i know of) in ati catalyst control center including v sync/ triple bufferring, anti aliasing etc, none make any difference, although the lower the fps the worse the stutterring, but generally so long as its below 60 it stutters pretty madly.

overclocking/underclocking gpu/cpu also makes no difference, and drivers for the g card are the latest. 12.1 CCC.

im not sure if i dont understand the FRAPS program but if this helps, the only thing that can stop the stutter in games is when i record with fraps!!? ill be running fraps, at about 30fps in skyrim or crysis, then the moment i start recording, it drops to say 21 but completely removes the frame skipping. the frame skipping returns the moment the video recording ends.

my friend said it might be that i need to disable some video encoding thing in bios that intel has on its chips? but i couldnt find this option because he wasnt sure exactly what it was.

any help would be much appreciated!! thanks :)

Hi, one thing that I'd advise to check on (not completely sure how it works) is that your system is using the dedicated GPU. Check in bios if there's any options to disable the integrated GPU.

Other than that, which game are you trying to run? what resolution and settings? have you tried enabling vsync?

what monitor do you have?

how is your GPU temperature during these stuttering games? (hwmonitor, speedfan or hwinfo to check)
I'd expect if it's not hitting 60 it's probably running somewhat hotter than when you're playing a game that it's able to gun at 60++

Get back with all that info and we can go from there

TURBOCABBABE, I have the EXACT same problem! Only recording a video will smooth my frame rate, and i have top of the line everything, including the gtx680. SUCKS! If you hear of any solutions, let me know. i've replaced my graphics card, motherboard, added a hard drive, and tested my ram. fraps is ALL that will work for me

I'm having this exact problem. Stutter in games and benchmarks but when I record with FRAPS or Afterburner it completely solves the problem.

i7 920
gigabyte X58
6GB DDR3
GTX460

I have tried everything that I can think of short of throwing the system into the dumpster and buying a new one. If anyone has a solution or the slightest idea on what could be causing this then please post. PLEASE!

monitor your hard drive wile u play. hooking up a extra monitor would make this easy. stuttering is usually cpu or hard drive, so monitor on you hardware as you play. sometimes a random process can max out the cpu.
