Stuttering During Games

Hello everyone, I have been running with a poor GPU for a fair few years now and finally bit the bullet and purchased myself a OC GTX 1060 6GB with hopes to run Fortnite BR with no stuttering or 'lag'. When I say lag, I am referring to when I pick up an item or something, the game would momentarily freeze causing playing to be difficult. It is better described as stuttering as I am on 14 ping and it runs nicely otherwise. To cut a long post short, I was wondering if someone could help me diagnose why my computer doesnt seem to be able to run this game at even low without stuttering, even though I can run DOOM and Witcher 3 on Ultra with steady 60FPS. Any help/advice is amazing, thank you guys. I also saw it with other games like Heroes of the Storm and Battlefront 2 Demo

12GB RAM
Processor- AMD FX 4100 Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard- GA-970A-DS3


Thank you, I am running out of options and I am wondering whether I should pick up a SSD and run the game off that instead as my HDD is probably 5 years old now. Thankyou

You're running the game with a pretty dated CPU. The 4100 was released Oct of 2011 (it's 6 years old now and it lagged behind Intel's offerings at the time). Right now, your CPU is the bottleneck for your system.

What you have in there isn't much better over the Phenom II x4 940 I ran 3-4 years back. I even overclocked it from 3.0GHz to 3.6 and sometimes ran her at 3.7. I ran two GTX 570s in SLI as well (they run around 25% slower than 1 single GTX 970 - which is about what your current GTX 1060 is comparable to).

I then moved to an i5-4670k and even just running that CPU at stock speeds, I saw my performance in all games at least double in the fps I was getting under the same GPUs with the PII x4 940 at 3.6GHz.

While you may be able to run some games with decent performance, others are going to be hindered, especially if they only utilize one or two cores.

Thank you so much for your reply, you don't understand how much you have helped me out here! 😀 It makes perfect sense and to be honest, I am a little embarressed that I didn't notice myself. It was interesting hearing about your frame rates and OCing so thank you for that info too. I now have my eyes set on an Intel i5 7600 CPU as it is a decent performer and sits nicely in my budget. Any thoughts on this? Anything I should research/consider before buying? Thank you again for your help!!!

You should feel and notice a big difference moving out from that FX 4100. Even if you were to overclock the 4100 to 4.2 GHz or higher, it would still feel sluggish when compared to the i5 7600. Just remember you'll need new RAM for the move to the 7600. The DDR3 you're currently using won't work, you'll need to pick up some DDR4.

Hello again! Wow, the help you have given me is unbelievable! Thank you so much, I will be looking into getting some DDR4 RAM, will be looking at about £70 for 8GB which should last me a while. Thank you, can't wait to see the difference it makes! Good luck with everything in the future!
