Hello i am having stuttering problems when playing overwatch. The first few matches there is no stuttering but then it starts stuttering when doing simple things like moving around a corner. Things I have done are uninstalled all of my razer programs made sure to update to the latest version of my operating system which is Windows 10 version 1903 and update my drivers.
Here is a screenshot of my temperature when the stuttering happened View: https://imgur.com/a/wuKC96c

I have a lenovo y520 laptop the specs are GeForce GTX 1050 2GB i5-7300HQ CPU

Nvme pcie m2 ssd and or sata 2.5" ssd. With m2, your laptop only supports pcie nvme versions not m2 sata.

You have a few combination options.

  1. Pair your existing hdd with nvme pcie ssd.
  2. Replace hdd with 2.5" sata ssd. (Note. 2.5" sata ssd looks like a normal hdd, this isn't an m2 sata ssd. M2 sata and nvme ssds look similar, like a memory stick kind of)
  3. Pair 2.5" sata ssd and nvme pcie ssd
Samsung make good ssds in either form.
Nvme ssd maximum size for your laptop is 512GB. Sata 2.5" ssd's don't have capacity restrictions.

Nvme capacity;

Stuttering over prolonged use can be caused by heat or pagefile build up. Cooling pad, faster drive like an ssd or more ram can help.

What drive is Windows and game on and how much memory does the laptop have?

---

Regarding vsync, if this is helping, that's because vsync limits frame rates so there's less frame preparation from the cpu and gpu isn't rendering as many and as a result less cpu work and heat produced by either cpu or gpu.

If vsync input lag bothers you, just limit fps to 58 using a program like Msi Afterburner or Nvidia Inspector if the game doesn't have an fps limiter. With fps limited you should be able to enable vsync without any lag. The two extra frames prevents the side effects caused by vsync working on the very threshold of your refresh rate.

i dont have an ssd

https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/legion-laptops/lenovo-legion-y-series/Legion-Y520/p/88GMY500808

Think thats yours. It can have an ssd but if you say it didn't come with then you're running a v.slow 5400 hdd and wouldn't be helping at all.

Doesn't say how much ram it has in it but id assume 8GB? With a 5400 rpm hdd, there's no doubt there's a lot of paging going on ( virtual memory) on the hdd and it increases overtime.

More ram + m2 ssd, reinstall Windows and you'll be good as gold. 5400hdd has no place for Windows or games, they're only good for storing photos etc.

Change the slow 5400 HDD for a faster one, even an SATA SSD will do miracles.

If i had that laptop i would;

1: Purchase a 1TB or 2TB SATA SSD like Samsung: https://www.newegg.com/samsung-860-evo-series-2tb/p/N82E16820147671
2: Have Windows 10 install ready on USB stick. Can do so using Windows Media Creation tool, see tutorial below.
3: Backup personal data on external drive or another computer
4: Remove laptop battery and open the case where the HDD bay is and replace the HDD with the SSD
5: Insert Windows 10 USB to boot from and install

How to install Windows 10:

Your laptop is suffering because the 5400 HDD is very slow.

Do you have the exact same laptop with the same drive configuration with a 5400rpm drive? I have a feeling they're not sure what drive they have but all i can do is go by their response.

You're better off starting your own thread

I am unbale to update my bios. Things I have tried updating it with the lenovo vantage program but it gives me this message fail 1 update failed to download and install, I tried downloading the bios from the support website and it gave me this error message, mount the efi system partition. Im on the latest version of windows 10 my drivers are also all up to date. Also my bios is just called bios. I tried doing it via the support website under the automatic updates tab but that does also not work.
