Sudden entire desktop reset??? "Preparing your desktop" on each restart???

Using the build since april this year. Everything perfectly fine.

While playing an online game (Tanki Online), noticed too much lag. Nvidia web helper downloading like crazy, so used netlimiter to limit the speeds. Then Microsoft Antimalware something downloading at crazy speeds, killed it's connections and limited the speed.

Weird things started happening very shortly (where I've been using netlimiter demo since 4 days now) and everything kinda crashed, like stopped responding, exactly how it did when a hardware fault came

(like when I OC'ed my CPU too high with too low vCore, entire screen, audio output would totally freeze and wont respond to anything until i took the plug out and plugged it back in)

Force restarted after switching off. Logged in fine. Tried to turn on nvidia shadowplay. didnt work at all. Tried again. crashed again just like before.

Switch off-switch on again as it didnt respond at all. Restarted to see my entire desktop gone, everything reset but the data is all there.

Everything, i mean EVERYTHING. Startup, shortcuts, windows explorer favorites menu, chrome settings and app data, windows media player, all the playlists, just as if it was a new user.

Nvidia Control Panel crashes instantly on starting and the right click shortcut is also gone.
Starting explorer through Start+E, it said "Nvidia Island Demo" down the taskbar. I uninstalled the demo anyway.

Netlimiter, on starting, says "there was no endpoint listening at at net.pipe://127.0.0.1/NetLimiterPipe0 that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. See InnerException, if present, for more details."

Google Chrome's running shortcut says " --profile-directory=Default" at the end of it.
Windows Media Player says " /prefetch:1" at the end of it's shortcut in the taskbar.


All my user files are still exactly there but when I open it from start menu, it says "Achint (my
username) but loads into C:\Users\Temp. The same is with appdata, and all user related folders.

However, I have an alternate user account which I made just in case something got screwed up just like this and I never really used it but all it's files are right there, normal.

It took me an entire week for a first time setup and I'm too used to all the shortcuts and stuff. I dont have ANY backups of this.

I can still access the internet. Tried to go into safe mode but it did the exact same thing - loaded everything from C:\Users\Public and created C:\Users\TEMP

How do I get it all back?

If the other user works fine, the crash has corrupted your file for the account.
Try a chkdsk on c drive to see if it fixes the issue.
If not, create another account and transfer the data into it.
Then delete the corrupted one.

If you are still overclocking, reset the BIOS to defaults.

CHKDISK /F C: will TRY to fix it. It may not succeed. If not, follow Dextermat suggestion. But if there is a problem you'll need to clear that up first.

It took me about 2 hours at midnight...

I ran through some quick google searches for a while, which resulted in being awfully long because I couldn't find anything specific, and then I landed on a detailed solution from microsoft here:

I tried method 1 and it worked.
What's scarey is, there were no ".bak" folders for any other user accounts. This means everyone should keep registry backups at all times atleast.

(P.S my clocks were fully stable, core damage/furmark/intelburntestv2/heaven/valley tested for a nonstop whole week. Still no idea what made my system crash though.)


My account wasn't corrupted or anything. Something triggered a false alarm and made windows land my user on a temporary user account each time I logged in.

What exactly did I do:

I used regedit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-(a long number)
This key contained key values which said the userprofile lands on C:\Users\Temp

There was also a key named "S-1-5-(a long number).bak" which had the actual original userprofile config.
So I right clicked on the backup key and exported it.
Then renamed the current TEMP key to "S-1-5-(a long number).random"
Then renamed the backup key to "S-1-5-(a long number)" (removed the .bak from the end)
Then deleted the TEMP registry folder
Then restored the original backup key which I had exported, so that there's no corrupt backup.

Keeping in mind, if these steps aren't followed properly, users dont display properly and become unusable. At first I didn't remove the ".random" key and as long as I had the main user and it's ".bak" folder, it worked but my other two users disappeared and said "Other users" with no profile pic.

I did all this, uninstalled nvidia drivers, rebooted, user worked properly, reinstalled nvidia drivers, and everything works fine now.

Everything's working fine. I didn't try rebooting again but I'm sure it'll all be fine now.
Whew. This was quite simple. Relieved, i gotta say. Thanks for the replies
