How often do you clean your laptop?

By nature, laptops are terrible at collecting dust/ debris in their intake vents which would be the main cause of overheating. Lots of people misuse laptops because of their name; running them on beds, blankets, couches etc. All the while sucking up all sorts of fabric strands and dust. I would first start (if you havent already) by getting a can (or two) of an electronic duster and going to town. Just try to blow air into the exhaust vents. Blowing air into the intake will only push debris further into any heatsinks along the way.

Yes, the cpu/gpu getting too hot will cause the framerate to drop because the computer will be throttling back the power to protect itself.

Dust Bunnies love laptops and if you do what Rex suggests that should help.
