Sudden free space drop on C:, Windows update?

Have noticed a sudden drop in free space by 2 GB, haven't installed or downloaded anything large since I last checked C:

Also noticed that a couple of updates had been downloaded in the background coinciding with this, (KB3176936) and (KB3176934)

Likely where my space has gone? Seems like a large amount for two updates...

KB3176936 and KB3176934 are "cumulative update" and should therefore be expected to be of substantial size. We have all our machines set up to only download when we say so ... we usually wait 48-72 hours after a notification that updates are available before deciding what to install.

I have heard all of the arguments about how this is dangerous, which I don't see as viable but:

a) I have never heard of anyone having a downside by waiting 48 hours ...

b) I have heard of dozens of instances where allowing an auto install has crippled machines or componentry and experienced same directly.


I would strongly suggest that you do at least Item 1:

1. Turn off Windows ability to install Hardware drivers

When notified of an update, you can always install it manually.

2. Stop Windows Update from installing anything ... until you are ready for it to do so

Thanks for this. Part 2 seems kind of complicated, being on wired ethernet I'm thinking I'll want to set my ethernet connection as metered? Should I just leave KB3176936 and KB3176934 as they are now they've installed?

What's the best option for disabling Windows update for the Home version? option 4 or 5 at tenforums?
