Sudden shutdowns, possible HDD failure?

So this started about a month or so ago as far as I can remember. I started getting completely random (either that or I don't see the pattern) shutdowns. At first I thought it might be my PSU's protections kicking in (I'm running the PC off the wall as I can't afford a UPS at the moment and we don't exactly have the most stable power grid), but now I'm not so sure.
Around the same time this started happening, I noticed my computer made a rattling noise on startup. I didn't think much of it at the time, thought it might be a fan hitting a cable or something, but now I'm starting to think it's the hard drive. I can hear it almost constantly, although once I get into Windows it stops being very loud and becomes a sort of high-frequency low-noise rattling. However when I'm starting up the PC it's VERY noticeable and it seems to increase and decrease (I think the increases and decreases are in line with spikes in HDD usage as Windows loads up files).
I've had the HDD for about 4 years now, and it's recently shown another problem as well, seemingly misreading how much space is actually taken up (one day it shows 40GB left, the next 120GB even though I didn't uninstall or delete anything). After one of the sudden shutdowns Windows' disk repair kicked in as well.

So I'm assuming this is almost certainly mechanical failure in the drive. I just wanted to see if anyone has any other idea for what it might be, however unlikely.

EDIT: These shutdowns are not very frequent, I've gone a week without one only to have it happen again. And it seems unrelated to system load as it's happened both while playing intensive games and while on the freakin' desktop.

Seriously dude, back up important files and throw the hdd out. You can get a 1tb replacement for 50$. It's a fairly easy thing to do. Open up the side of your pc and unplug the hdd.
Such noises as you describe them are 99,99% of the time hdd failing.

Yeah I know how cheap and easy it is to replace the HDD, I just want to make sure it's not some other component first, however unlikely.

Don't really get what you mean. The fan is blowing air towards the heatsink's plates (I'm using a Zalman CNPS5X Performa by the way). If you're asking if there's any airflow on the part of the motherboard surrounding the CPU, there should be some from the case fans. I've had this cooler and CPU running for over a year with no issue though.

So run one of the free HD monitoring util, I run HDsentinel myself, it will tell you everything you need to know.

HD these days are self-monitoring, all the diagnostic data is there, I don't know why Windows don't already have a GUI front end for this basic stuff and we have to run a third party.

Already tried CrystalDiskInfo and it only shows 8 problematic sectors. I'll try a monitoring utility like you suggest though.
