Suddenly nothing responds in Windows Vista

I have a dual-boot computer. The Linux half works fine. But I have a very important set of programs on the Windows Vista half, and suddenly every time I boot Windows every single program gives me a "not responding" response. What can I do about this? I don't want to lose my files!

1. backup your files to a thumb drive.
2. when is the last time you ran an anti virus/malware program on your windows side of the hard drive ?
